Aikido day course and grading (September 27, 2009)
Course Subject:
Irimi (Entering Techniques) with Atemi (Striking, Tanto (Knife) Disarming Techniques and Kaeshiwaza (countering)
Time:
10.00 am to 04:30 pm but please be at the Dojo by 09:30 am to register
Further details:
Atemi is also often used to briefly break an opponent's balance (kuzushi) or resolve. A painful but non-fatal blow to an area such as the eyes, face, or some vulnerable part of the abdomen can open the way for a more damaging technique, such as a throw or joint lock. Even if the blow does not land, the opponent can be distracted, and may instinctively contort their body (e.g., jerking their head back from a face strike) in such a way that they lose their balance.
Irimi is the art of entering or closing the gap between the person attacking (Uke) and the defender (Nage), so that the Nage can then use Atemi and/or a technique directly. Kaeshiwaza are countering techniques, although you will need to have an understanding of Aikido to make the most of this part of the course.
Sensei Paul Barker will demonstrate Aikido applications where Irimi and Atemi is an integral part of the technique. The tanto disarming techniques, meanwhile, will be demonstrated against the 6 to 8 different ways that the Tanto can be used by an attacker to stab or slash.
